Dr. Vassil Boiadjiev

Dr Vassil Boiadjiev is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ and he continues to collaborate on projects with Dr Thundat’s group. His honors include an R&D 100 Award (2004), 1 issued patent (Bulgarian Patent No. 42590) and three pending patents (US).

 

He received his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 2000. Prior to his time at UWM, he was educated at Sofia University in Bulgaria, receiving his MS and BS in 1993 and 1992, respectively.

Prior to his work at Rowan, he was an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee and did Postdoctoral work at ORNL and the University of Minnesota.

Current and Past Projects

• Continuing collaboration with the Nanoscale Science and Devices Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on microcantilever sensors
• microcantilever functionalization for ultrasensitive detection of chemicals and biomaterials
• development of chemical sensors for ultrasensitive detection of explosive vapors in air and hexavalent chromium in ground water using adsorption-induced stress on chemically functionalized micromachined microcantilevers
• Molecular design, preparation and characterization (FTIR, AFM, RBS, XPS, SEM) of functionalized organic SAMs on silicon surfaces, subsequent DNA attachment and hybridization in microfluidic chip array (Fluorescent Microscopy)
• In vacuo Chemical Vapor Deposition of inorganic and organic thin films; liquid phase deposition; detailed Transmission and Multiple Internal Reflection Infrared studies of organometallic species on silicon and oxide surfaces to design resistant and lubricating SAMs; Solid State NMR and Electron Microprobe Analyses applied for additional characterization; Transmission FTIR studies of ethylene polymerization catalyzed by organometallic surface species on alumina
• Ultrahigh vacuum and atmospheric pressure studies of Pd-catalyzed cyclotrimerization of acetylene to benzene using Temperature Programmed Desorption, Auger, Mass spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography
• Electrochemical Deposition of Tungsten Coatings from molten-salt electrolytes; coatings characterization by XRD, Electron Microprobe (EDS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Central Laboratory for Electrochemical Power Sources
• R&D - plastics metallization (patent BG No. 42590), kinetics, catalysis (catalytical activity of oxidized metal glasses) and preparation of high-temperature superconducting materials, Sofia University,
